“Moving Life Forward” National Public Works Week E-mail

Image The week of May 20 – 26, 2007, has been designated as National Public Works Week by Chattanooga Mayor Ron Littlefield.  The theme of this year’s celebration is, “Moving Life Forward.”

According to the American Public Works Association, National Public Works Week is a celebration of the tens of thousands of men and women in North America who provide and maintain the infrastructure and services collectively known as public works.  National Public Works Week originally began as a public education campaign in 1960 and continues to, “enhance the prestige of the often–unsung heroes of our society–the professionals who serve the public good every day with quiet dedication.”

“These are some the most dedicated and devoted employees working for the City of Chattanooga.  It is only befitting that this week be set aside in their honor,” stated Mayor Littlefield.

The general public will have the opportunity to learn about the day to day activities of the Public Works Division with exhibits, materials and hands-on displays at the Public Works Expo.  This event will be held Friday, May 25, 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m., at Miller Plaza Pavilion.

WHEREAS:  The public works infrastructure, facilities and services are of vital importance to the health, safety, and well-being of the residents of the City of Chattanooga; and

WHEREAS:  Such facilities and services could not be provided without the dedicated efforts of public works professionals, engineers and administrators, representing our City, who are responsible for and must design, build, operate, and maintain the transportation system , sewage collection and treatment systems, our solid waste collection and disposal system, and other structures and facilities essential to serve our citizens; and

WHEREAS:  It is in the public interest for the citizens and civic leaders of this   country to gain knowledge of and to maintain a progressive interest in the public works needs and programs of their respective communities;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ron Littlefield, Mayor of Chattanooga Tennessee do hereby designate the week May 20-26, 2007, as

National Public Works Week

with the theme of Public Works: ‘Moving Life Forward.’ I further urge all our citizens to join with representatives of our governmental agencies and the American Public Works Association in activities and ceremonies designed to pay tribute to our public works professionals, engineers and administrators and to recognize the substantial contributions they have made to our national health
and welfare.

Signed Mayor Ron Littlefield
