"This art contest is a fun and creative way for students to learn about the importance of clean water," said John Watson, vice president Tennessee American Water. "Today's students are the future stewards, so it's imperative that they learn about the impact they can have."
This year's contest had more than 70 entries, which were judged by Jeff Worley, graphic designer with the Tennessee Aquarium, and Susan Holmes, Water Quality Supervisor for Tennessee American Water. Entries were judged based on the students' ability to express in writing their understanding of why it is important to protect our watersheds and how well they translate their words into art.
The winners received a prize package that included tickets to the Tennessee Aquarium and IMAX 3D Theater. The Grand Prize winner's classroom receives a gift card from School Box Supply for a classroom purchase. This year's winners are:
Grand Prize: Patricia D'Meza, Bess T. Shepherd Elementary
Miss D'Meza clearly understands the meaning of a clean watershed and the importance. In her essay describing her artwork, she writes, "my picture tells that the water on Earth should be taken care of, it needs to be clean and unpolluted, because all the animals and people in the world need clean water."
First Place: Kristinn Petty, Battle Academy
Miss Petty describes the important of clean water and the health benefits it provides.
Second Place: Shevius Joyner, 21st Century Academy
Mr. Joyner talks about having water to drinking to make the body work correctly.
Third Place: Johnni Orozco, Bess T. Shepherd Elementary
Mr. Orozco talks about the importance of water to wildlife and nature.
